Suppose that you’ve arrived in a new city, but you don’t really know where you are and are looking for a place to eat. You feel so helpless! But now you have no worry about it, this Tuesday Mozilla Labs released Firefox Geode which can automatically deduces your location, and serves up some delicious suggestions a couple blocks away and plots directions there.

Firefox Geode is an experimental add-on to explore geolocation in Firefox 3 ahead of the implementation of geolocation in a future product release.

It’s very easy to use Geode. When a web site requests your location a notification bar will ask how much information you want to give that site: your exact location, your neighborhood, or your city, which you can get many suggestions from. Furthermore, the potential is for more than just restaurant lookups. For example, imagine an RSS reader that knows the difference between home and work and automatically changes its behavior appropriately. Or a news site whose local section is, in fact, actually local. Or Web site authentication that only allows you to login from certain physical locations, like your house.

Smush It - Optimize Images for You

Yahoo! released a new free image optimization tool called Smush It in Ajax Experience conference, which was just held in Boston. The tool was developed by Stoyan Stefanov and Nicole Sullivan who come from Yahoo! Exceptional Performance Team.

Image optimization is an art that not many people master. There are many good image editing tools that allow us to get the best visual result for a certain file size but “under the hood” a lot more optimization can be done. “Smush It” is a service that goes beyond the limitations of Photoshop, Fireworks & Co. It uses image format specific non-lossy image optimization tools to squeeze the last bytes out of your images - without changing their look or visual quality. You’ll get a report of how many bytes you can save by optimizing your images and all the changed images as a single zip for download.

You just need to upload images you want to optimize, and then Smush It will complete the remains. You can even supply image URLs and it will locate and optimize from those links. It’s also available for Firefox.

Performance just got a little bit easier. Optimizing images by hand is time consuming and painful. Smush It does it for you.

Google Knol Experiments with Audio Playback

Google Knol is a social networking which likes Wikipedia and mshalo, you can share knols that you like, by posting them to social news sites like Digg. And now, Google Knol are experimenting with Audio Playback as an option for some knols, starting with a handful of English language featured knols. You can listen to them online, or by downloading an mp3 file and using any mp3 player.

At present, the speech system doesn’t make very noticeable distinctions between paragraphs, sections, or chapters. And the pace of a text-to-speech rendition goes most awry is with abbreviations and acronyms and so on, which makes us can not hear noticeable distinctions.

Although the Knol Audio Playback is not perfect, it is so novel. Maybe this way will be popular in the future, we are looking forward to its development.

Adobe Configurator - Custom Your Own Photoshop

If you are a designer who works in Photoshop, maybe how to access all the tools you use the most as fast as ever possible is what you really need. You want to utilize Photoshop in your own way, although using keyboard short cuts is clearly the fastest way, it isn’t as convenient as mouse clicking. Now Adobe plans to release a first version of Adobe Configurator at Adobe Labs once Photoshop CS4 ships. With Adobe Configurator, you can customize your own Photoshop, which makes it as easy as dragging and dropping to build your own Photoshop panels.

Some details had been disclosed already, although Adobe Configurator has not been officially issued yet. As the highlight, Adobe Configurator allows all of us to create new panels with simple drag and drop, let's share some samples together.

Tools Panel
All the tools are in the left palette and can be placed on the new panel. You can create in minutes a new tools panel. Once you have all the tools placed in your panel, you just only save the panel and then export the panel to Photoshop CS4.

Command/Menu Panel
As mentioned before menu access is not really fast. With Adobe Configurator, you can create a panel with just access to commands you use the most come in handy.

Scripts and Actions Panel
Maybe you have found calling scripts via menus slow and creating keyboard shortcuts via actions is also limited, for we easily run out of function key/modifier combinations and also forget them. But now all our key scripts are just one click away with our custom mew panel.
